Safety for fishermen has to be dealt with from both government level and grassroots level. There has to be a holistic approach where governments and regional bodies coordinate their activities with the activities among fishermen, villages, schools, etc.

This is a problem both in the developed part of the world as well as in the developing part.

Safety for fishermen and fishing vessels should always be an integral part of any fisheries livelihoods project, coastal vulnerability project, climate change project, and integrated coastal zone management project. Safety for fishermen is a cross cutting issue and should always be seen in a holistic perspective.

Safety for fishermen initiatives has to be tackled from both government level and grassroots level to be successful.

The fishermen and the people in the fishing villages have to be part of the safety for fishermen initiatives, it is important to have a participatory approach, to reach out to the fishermen with the message. The involvement and commitment by local communities are vital for the success of the work.
